Title: Breathe In, Breathe In
Characters: Joshua and Neku
Pairing: Joshua/Neku (heavily implied)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Once more, Neku watches the empty air where Joshua had been. Once more, he puts his head down and keeps working, passing days until Joshua shows up again. And Joshua will show up. He always does.
Notes: ALRIGHT, SINCE LJ WAS BEING A DOUCHEWAGON FOR THE PAST WEEK, I couldn't get this up in time. BUT I DON'T CARE, I'M PUTTING IT UP ANYWAY. Because I like it. For
subarashiki_ds Summer Revival prompt "Deceptive Cadence".
Other Notes: Not sure if anyone really cares, but this is exactly 399 words long. Almost, but not quite, at an even resolution (oh ho ho, I am clever, see what I did there /sarcasm)

Joshua slides away, his last giggle hanging in the air, and Neku stares at the space he occupied a few seconds ago, weariness sinking into his bones. He leans listlessly back in his chair.
He's in college now. It's been years since the Game, and Joshua still just sidles into his life like Neku will drop everything to accommodate him. (It's infuriating that Neku finds himself doing just that: putting his burgeoning life on hold to follow Joshua's whims. What's worse is that he doesn't even notice that he's doing it until after Joshua leaves.) It never changes.
It goes like this:
Neku is doing fine in his life, settling in, fitting in with people in his own way, expanding his horizons.
Joshua steps in, smiles at him.
Neku looks up at him. His heart constricts (he doesn’t bother asking why) and, next thing he knows, he's doing stupid, meaningless tasks for Joshua. (He'd be worried about Joshua imprinting him, but Joshua gave him a Player Pin to carry around in the Real Ground just to avoid that. Like he knew what Neku was going to think. Smug bastard.)
It ends like this:
Joshua trails a hand across the back of Neku’s neck, smile turning filthy, nails digging in, proprietary, and Neku’s breath catches in his throat, he leans in.
Joshua slips away and leaves, amused laughter always lingering behind him.
And Neku just stares, left unfinished, unfulfilled. Waiting for the proper resolution.
Once more, Neku watches the empty air where Joshua had been. Once more, he puts his head down and keeps working, passing days until Joshua shows up again. And Joshua will show up. He always does.
(He will never be done with Neku. Not now. Not after three hellish weeks in the Game. Not ever. Joshua will never be able to leave Neku alone.)
So Neku waits, going through the motions of life. He smiles at people, talks to them, calls Shiki and Beat and Rhyme to Hachiko to hang out. He goes back to his room and sleeps, wakes up for the new day.
Joshua steps into his room.
Neku looks up at him, at Joshua’s smile, at the slender and elegant curve of his waist and hips and hands. Swallows the typical surge of lust and readies himself to be used again. (Joshua smiles.)
They will never be done.
Neku waits for his resolution.
